[Dovecot] noob - integrating dovecot with postfix

Hi list, Just jumped providers and am now desperately trying to get IMAP running on a new server... But not getting the link between postfix and dovecot working. :-( My two problems are: 1) local mail seems to get into the ~/Maildirs, but not from the outside (this is a postfix issue?) 2) I cannot find information on how to tell postfix to use virtual domains/addresses and then connect dovecot to them (as they are now in non-standard locations and/or formats) I'm sure this is a FAQ, but cannot find an example that would walk me though this. Can someone kindly point me in the right direction? -- Mitch

[Dovecot] Excessive imap-login and pop3-login processes

I'm running a Linux mail server with Postfix and Dovecot. I've noticed that the number of "imap-login" processes usually sits around 240, and "pop3-login" usually around 50 or so. The comments in the config file seem to indicate that, with my setup, I shouldn't see more than about 10 of each. Am I misunderstanding the config or is this expected behavior? login_process_per_connection = no login_processes_count = 10 login_max_processes_count = 128 login_max_logging_users = 256 The mail server receives about 1.5 - 3 logins per second and usually has around 75 simultaneous IMAP sessions. [Dovecot] dovecot 1.0-test52 build notes

I thought I would try to use 'configure' to lay out the dovecot install a little differently than the default. I prefer all the support files under one tree (e.g. in /usr/local/lib/dovecot-1.0) rather than distributed around the filesystem. And I'd be happiest if all of the support files were just at that top level rather than in subdirectories. e.g.: /usr/local/lib/dovecot-1.0/dovecot.conf /usr/local/lib/dovecot-1.0/imap-login /usr/local/lib/dovecot-1.0/dovecot-auth etc. (I'm happy to have a "doc" subdirectory though.) And ideally I'd have the primary executable installed in a more generic place, but tagged with its version number, like /usr/local/sbin/dovecot-1.0 Note that I'm not suggesting this, just explaining what I am after. So the second to last thing I tried was: --program-suffix=-1.0 \ --bindir=/usr/local/lib/dovecot-1.0 \ --sbindir=/usr/local/lib/dovecot-1.0 \ --libexecdir=/usr/local/lib/dovecot-1.0 \ --sysconfdir=/usr/local/lib/dovecot-1.0 \ --datadir=/usr/local/lib/dovecot-1.0 \ --localstatedir=/usr/local/lib/dovecot-1.0 \ But that didn't really work, for the reasons listed in the "last" try below, plus all of the executables got the "-1.0" suffix, not just the "dovecot" program (not a big surprise..). And the last thing I tried: --bindir=/usr/local/lib/dovecot-1.0 \ --sbindir=/usr/local/lib/dovecot-1.0 \ --libexecdir=/usr/local/lib/dovecot-1.0 \ --sysconfdir=/usr/local/lib/dovecot-1.0 \ --datadir=/usr/local/lib/dovecot-1.0 \ --localstatedir=/usr/local/lib/dovecot-1.0 \ which kinda got me where I wanted, except that if I want a dovecot-1.0 executable in /usr/local/sbin I need to add that by hand, and also that the build process added another subdirectory "dovecot": /usr/local/lib/dovecot-1.0/dovecot/ I can (and did) manually remove that final directory and flatten out the tree, and fortunately you've made it possible to specify in dovecot.conf the paths to all the executables and so forth. But it would be nice to be able to create this desired layout entirely via configure and not have to move things around after the fact. Is that even possible? Obviously, don't spend a lot of time on it.. but if I'm missing an option that would get me where I want, I'd be interested in knowing about it. Oh, and "strings src/master/dovecot | grep /usr/local" gives this: /usr/local/lib/dovecot-1.0/dovecot.conf /usr/local/lib/dovecot/imap /usr/local/lib/dovecot-1.0/dovecot/imap /usr/local/lib/dovecot-1.0/run/dovecot /usr/local/lib/dovecot-1.0/dovecot/dovecot-auth /usr/local/lib/dovecot-1.0/dovecot/imap-login /usr/local/lib/dovecot-1.0/dovecot/pop3-login /usr/local/lib/dovecot-1.0/dovecot/pop3 /usr/local/lib/dovecot/pop3 So it looks like there are a couple of places where the configured paths aren't caught (or so it would seem). Compile issues on an older BSD/OS 4.2 system: src/lib/byteorder.h needs #include <netinet/in.h> to pick up in_addr struct src/lib/byteorder.c no "libgen" here (no basename()). Added it inline, no big deal, but you might want to have configure test for this and provide one if it's missing. Also, on this system there are no types like "uint8_t" and "uint64_t" -- instead there are the u_int8_t and u_int64_t et al types. I added some global typedefs, but I gather this is a somewhat common issue, so you might want to test for these. -mm-

Okay heres a weird question is there anyways to make dovecot run as root ? Heres why: I'm currently using XMail email server (smtp/pop3/virtual accounts). And I love using it. But it really must run as root. I've tryed all the non-root solutions for it. and really I'd prefer to have it run as root. And I'd like to really use dovecot as (on server with xmail). Currently I've got it running with some sendmail server and a few postfixs But really I'd like to get it working with Xmail. So if anyone has any Ideas or how to get Dovecot to run as root. PS. I know the Idea behind dovecot is security and how it's coded to be able to run using non-root accont. So please I'm really only looking for ways to get dove to run as root. And not new ways of reconfiguring my smtp servers so as they don't need to be run as root. -- Chris L. Franklin --

Hello, First sorry for my poor english. slack 9.1 dovecot-0.99.11 (thanks for this) compiled with openssl (0.9.7b) MUA : Mozilla 1.5 (win32) Under a ssl session, at first, it's work. But a later ago, i recieved alway, when i tried to contact the server imap : "connecting to <host> timed out ..." This fact is never without ssl. No dns problems. I don't know how can i help you my best because i don't see the problem. So, i give you this information. Hope it will be help you for a solution. [Dovecot] Unread mail problem

Okay, here is the set up. I have Outlook set up to keep mail on the server for 5 days. At some point I started downloading all my mail that was on the server over and over again, even though I already have the mail. The weird thing is that it did not download all the mail, just a few. For example it would download 6 messages, then 18, then 12, etc! After I tried it a few times I had 50 of the same message in Outlook? A small fix, but I do not want to so this ever time If I unclick save on server and then check my mail, it will delete all the mail in my mail box. Hi Clinton, I've come across the same problem several times before - Outlook keeps messing up it's list of seen UIDLs. Try using Thunderbird instead. I moved a load of people in our company to Thunderbird because they kept having that problem and it's not happened for them since. As a matter of interest - I've seen both Outlook and Outlook Express do this on dovecot, mercury/32 and Exchange (when using pop3 for pickup).
