It isn't one to switch lightly and one should probably review filesystem 
semantics again, although the beauty of maildir is it isn't so crucial, a 
badly time glitch (if the semantic aren't perfect, or are tweaked for 
performance) could zap currently writing emails, but shouldn't corrupt a 
whole mailbox.

I think you need to start testing, be it ever so small. I think it fair to say 
dovecot works best with maildir (rather than mbox), and imap (rather than 
pop3), that reflects Timo's environment. Although he works hard to make it 
work in other environments, that is where it has had most exposure I believe.
