mail_plugin_dir is for mail modules. There are other modules which are using hardcoded paths. Perhaps we should actually just remove the mail_plugin_dir setting, I'm not sure there's any good use for it.

But I don't understand why Aki's suggestion wouldn't work:

Have you tried --with-moduledir=/etc/dovecot/modules when doing ./configure and use make DESTDIR=/nix/store/foobar to install things elsewhere.

Your answer was about using a different moduledir.
