Hello, just upgraded one of my testing machine from dovecot 1.2.15 to 2.0.7. Thank you Timo for beginning the port of URLAUTH, BURL, and CATENATE from 1.2 to 2.0. Attached please find two patches that finish the port to 2.0. One patch updates the dovecot-2.0-urlauth branch and is based on the tip of that branch. The other patch adds the full support to dovecot-2.0.beta5. [Dovecot] Sieve vacation not working

I've been trying all night to get vacation working in my .dovecot.sieve file. The way our email works is we have one account on dovecot which serves my mail and my wife's and we use procmail and sieve to put the emails in different folders depending on who it's for. I'm trying to set up a vacation reply on my wife's email address (aaaaaaaa@optus* below) so people can update to her new address. I removed .dovecot.lda-dupes and that didn't help; so then I touched it and now it's a 0 byte file and that didn't help. There is no dovecot.sieve.err file and I can't see anything in /var/log/dovecot.log which gives any message about why this wouldn't work. The emails to aaaaaaa@optus* get filed into the right folder so I know the matching is working. I've also tried a reject recipe and that worked fine, so I know that it can send an email if it chooses to. So it's a complete black box mystery as to why it just won't send a reply. Regards, Phill

Timo, would you consider adding support for "IMAP LIST Extension for Special-Use Mailboxes" <http://www.rfc-editor.org/rfc/rfc6154.txt> any time near in the future? I would really love to get rid of all those folders created by all those different mail clients just because they can't agree to use the same folder for special purpose. Obviously clients need to support it too. [Dovecot] Wrong remote IP (rip) in mail.log using IMAP login

Dear list users While trying to secure our dovecot server with fail2ban I came across the following problem: We use dovecot (1.2.9, ubuntu package) behind a NAT, and failed login attempts are logged with our firewall as the remote ip. Example: Apr 15 08:36:26 mail dovecot: imap-login: Disconnected (auth failed, 6 attempts): user=<xy>, method=PLAIN, rip=192.168.0.1, lip=192.168.0.3 Therefore I would ban 192.168.0.1 which means that I ban EVERY user. Funny thing is that POP3 login attempts are logged correctly: Apr 13 11:05:50 mail dovecot: pop3-login: Disconnected (auth failed, 1 attempts): user=<sgvyniwx>, method=PLAIN, rip=217.81.27.55, lip=192.168.0.3 Any ideas how to change this? [Dovecot] Zero-sized Maildir files and index corruption on over-quota

We are using Postfix as an MTA delivering via Dovecot's LDA (with sieve). We also use Dovecot as a POP/IMAP server. Mail storage is Maildir on NFS, indexes are stored locally. Quotas are FS quotas enforced by the NFS server. The Dovecot version is 1.2.11. Recently, for one user being over quota, some attempts to deliver mail bounced as expected while some others resulted in zero-sized Maildir files. I can verify zero-sized files in cur, while I cannot tell whether they were already zero-sized in new. However, since nobody except Dovecot is accessing the mail storage, it's either Dovecot's LDA or Dovecot's IMAP producing the zero-sized files. Logs show successful delivery (deliver: stored mail into mailbox 'INBOX') but ,,Corrupted index cache file /var/db/dovecot/indexes/XXX/.INBOX/dovecot.index.cache: Corrupted virtual size for uid=YYY: 0 != NNNN'' alerts on IMAP access. It looks like all mails which correctly got bounced are >64KB while those resulting in zero-sized files are <64KB (there is one >32KB). My first guess would be that maybe for large files, write() fails, while for small ones, close() fails or there is some buffering involved for large files.

Hello Dovecot users, I release a new version of Pigeonhole tonight. This release extends the configuration capabilities of the include and vacation extensions, adds the ihave extension (RFC 5463), and fixes a few small other things. Judging by Timo's plans, this will be one of the last feature releases for Dovecot v2.0, since I'll be switching active development to Dovecot v2.1 once that matures a little more. Changelog v0.2.4: + Vacation extension: finally added support for using the original recipient in vacation address check. It is also possible to disable the recipient address check entirely. Check doc/vacation.txt for configuration information. + Include extension: made limits on the include depth and the total number of included scripts configurable. Check doc/include.txt for configuration information. + Implemented ihave extension. This allows checking for the availability of Sieve language extensions at 'runtime'. Actually, this is checked at compile time. At runtime the interpreter checks whether extensions that were not previously available are still unavailable. If the situation changed, the script is re-compiled and the ihave tests are evaluated again. + Sieve: optimized compilation of tests that yield constant results (i.e. known at compile tme), such as 'true' and 'false'. No code is produced anymore for script sections that are never executed. Also, semantics are not verified anymore in uncompiled script sections. + Made vnd.dovecot.debug extension available to the LDA plugin instead of only the command line tools. + Sieve: redirect action now adds X-Sieve-Redirected-From header (mainly for people using SPF/SRS). - Sieve: fixed bug in handling flags and keywords; in case of error an assertion was triggered. - Script storage: improved handling of unconfigured user home directory. Originally this would produce an unhelpful error message. - Imap4flags extension: prevent forcibly enabling imap4flags when imapflags is enabled. - Fixed various -Wunused-but-set-variable compiler warnings. - Include extension: forgot to check variable identifier syntax for 'global' command. - Sieve: fixed debug mode; no messages were logged in some situations. - sievec tool: forgot to enable -D (debug) parameter. Hello I have been playing with some exotic authentication scheme with Dovecot and PAM. That involves sending really large base64 encoded data as the IMAP password, and I have hit a line limit in Dovecot, with AUTH_WORKER_MAX_LINE_LENGTH set to 1024. This limit is especially frustrating since other parts of the software use much larger limits: MAX_INBUF_SIZE 4096 MAX_IMAP_LINE 8192 AUTH_CLIENT_MAX_LINE_LENGTH 8192 I had to make the patch attached below to get my authentication working. I can live with this local patch, but given the much more liberal limits of MAX_INBUF_SIZE at 4096 makes we wonder if this 1024 limit on AUTH_WORKER_MAX_LINE_LENGTH could not be a bug. Or is there a security concern at using more than 1kB? Opinions? I'm quite sure that the problem has not existed in some earlier 2.0.x (maybe only INBOX as mailbox then though): ~user/Maildir/virtual/.week/dovecot-virtual contains INBOX INBOX.* -INBOX.Trash inthread refs younger 604800 This works as expected for the first time. But later on, also older messages/ threads are included until I delete the virtual/.week/dovecot.index*. ---- Just want to state that this problem still persists with latest version. Any idea? I don't think all authentications fail during the scenario, but I think the majority do. Based on the network traffic, dovecot is almost continuously trying to connect to the first listed server. It sometimes connects to the second listed server, but when it does, the connection does not persist, it goes away almost immediately. Ideally, I would like no authentications to fail if one of the MySQL servers is unavailable. If a few fail just when the server dies, that would be undesirable but acceptable as long as they do not continuously fail while the server is down. Am I doing something wrong? Does the example sql config have incorrect information? We were previously running dovecot 1.2.11, we just recently upgraded to 2. In the previous version, we actually had two different passdb's configured, each one listing only one of the mysql servers. I seem to recall that was the recommendation at the time for high-availability. When that configuration did not seem to work under version 2, I found an updated recommendation to list both servers in the same passdb, which also does not appear to work correctly. I actually went back and tested the older version, and determined it seemed to work okay in the case where the server was up but the service was down, and connections were refused, but also failed a large number of authentication attempts when the server was completely down and connections were timing out. Hi.. im still trying to upgrade to 2.0. Im getting: dovecot: lda: Error: userdb lookup: connect(/var/run/dovecot/auth-userdb) failed: Permission denied (euid=10000(vmail) egid=10000(vmail) missing +r perm: /var/run/dovecot/auth-userdb, euid is not dir owner) the error is correct caus its owned by root. My Questions is who should own it ? Im not sure how that works, what process/user calls the auth-userdb ? The auth-userdb returns the args generated in master.conf, right ? i think comment out the user and group setting in master.conf will fix it but im not sure if that is the securest way. the mails come from postfix via dovecot-lda Hans master.conf service auth { # auth_socket_path points to this userdb socket by default. Hello, is there a way to refilter all mails in a folder without loosing all flags and moving all messages in a different folder? I have >10k mails in my Inbox and need to create new filterrules from time to time. But there is no way to refilter my inbox without moving. Atm i need to move all mails in a folder like "refilter" and then run getmail/... to refilter the mails. It would be really nice to refilter a existing folder and just move mails with hits in the filter list. Thanks Dieter

Hi, I'm using dovecot 2.0.13 that ships with Ubuntu 11.10. I tried setting up a shared namespace as documented in the wiki to enable the sharing of a mailbox between two users. I have a Maildir(++) directory for each user. Each user has a system account. The Maildir of each user is owned by the user's system account and group read/writable by the group mail (hence mail_access_groups=mail). Relevant parts of my config: mail_plugins = acl mail_location = maildir:/home/dovecot/%u mail_access_groups = mail namespace { type = private separator = / prefix = inbox = yes hidden = no subscriptions = yes } namespace { type = shared separator = / prefix = shared/%%u/ location = maildir:/home/dovecot/%%u:INDEX=/home/dovecot/%u/shared/%%u subscriptions = no list = children } protocol imap { mail_plugins = $mail_plugins imap_acl } plugin { acl = vfile } plugin { acl_shared_dict = file:/home/dovecot/shared-mailboxes } When I try to create an ACL in a telnet session, the command fails with an internal error. The log shows: dovecot: imap(michael): Error: fstat(/home/dovecot/michael/.test/dovecot-acl.lock) failed: No such file or directory dovecot: imap(michael): Error: file_dotlock_open(/home/dovecot/michael/.test/dovecot-acl) failed: No such file or directory The error occurs whether a (manually created) dovecot-acl file exists or not. The dovecot-acl.lock file is created by not removed afterwards. Subsequent setacl commands will timeout waiting for the lock to be released until I delete it manually. If I create the dovecot-acl file manually and provide access to another user, the getacl command will correctly show the permissions and the other user can access the folder. setacl will still fail to modify the acl file, however (same error). Another thing that irritates me is that dovecot seems to use the dotlock locking method, although I explicitly set lock_method to fcntl (also tried flock, same behavior). I'm not using chroot. I just did a search through my archives - seems this topic has been requested a few times since my posting two years ago. I asked about a specific implementation - which Mr. Sirainen never commented on. He was probably focused on something more important at the time - like a paying job. So I'll ask again... Calling Timo! If we can't get clients to agree on a "standard" set of folders (probably reasonably safe assumption) and if protocol implementations of variations of "*LIST*" are too far in the future...what about having alternative folder names presented based on login name - maybe by an extension? So where my usual login might be "user(a)domain.com", and that would continue to be supported as the default login, I could now have "user(a)domain.com+thunderbird", "user(a)domain.com+mobile", etc.? And each of those extensions would then have a system-wide map defining folder name relationships, like "Sent=Sent Items". Does this seem doable? -- Daniel

[Dovecot] IMAP to Maildir Migration preserving UIDs?

Hello all, I'm facing the need to migrate from a proprietary IMAP server to Dovecot. The migration must be as smooth and transparent as possible. The mailbox format I would want to use is Maildir++. The storage format used by the current server is unknown, and I don't look forward to trying to reverse-engineer it. This leaves me with the option of reading the mailboxes using IMAP. There are tools like offlineimap or mbsync, and they do store the UID and UIDVALIDITY info. The last piece of the puzzle is a process to properly create the dovecot-uidlist and dovecot-uidvalidity files. So far I wasn't able to find anything on this. Are there any tips? Are there any tools available to do this job, or part of it? In either case I need this done, and I'll have to create whatever I can't find available. If there isn't anything out there that I'm yet to become aware of, then I'm looking at creating something like an offlineimap post-processing routine? Any help would be much appreciated. Gedalya

Hi, the zlib_save question reminds me of a wish: I think it's not possible to set zlib_save parameter per namespace (or even mailbox). Per namespace would be something for the wish list to get rid of the cron job method to compress archival mailboxes. And maybe an option to add a "Z" flag to compressed maildir message files as recommended in the wiki regarding compress crob job. Lutz

I am seeing a problem where users are limited to 6 imap logins total. One of my users has a bunch of phones and computers, and wants them all on at the same time. I'm looking through my configuration, and I cannot see a limit on how many times a single user can connect. He is connecting from different IPs. Any ideas? [Dovecot] MySQL server has gone away

I'm running 2.0.17 and I'm still seeing a decent amount of "MySQL server has gone away" errors, despite having multiple hosts defined in my auth userdb 'connect'. This is Debian Lenny 32-bit and I'm seeing the same thing with 2.0.16 on Debian Squeeze 64-bit. E.g.: Jan 12 20:30:33 auth-worker: Error: mysql: Query failed, retrying: MySQL server has gone away Our mail mysql servers are busy enough that wait_timeout is set to a whopping 30 seconds. On my regular boxes, I see a good deal of these in the logs. I've been doing a lot of mucking with doveadm/dsync (working on maildir->mdbox migration finally, yay!) on test boxes (same dovecot package & version) and when I get this error, despite the log saying it's retrying, it doesn't seem to be. Instead I get: dsync(root): Error: user ...: Auth USER lookup failed dsync(root): Fatal: User lookup failed: Internal error occurred. Refer to server log for more information. Watching tcpdump at the same time, it looks like it's going through some of the mysql servers, but all of them have by now disconnected and are in CLOSE_WAIT. Refer to server log for more information. 10.1.15.129 in this case is the dovecot server, and the 10.1.52.0/24 boxes are mysql servers. That's the same pattern I've seen almost every time. Just a FIN packet to two of the servers (ack'd by the mysql server) and then it fails. Is the retry mechanism supposed to transparently start a new connection, or is this how it works? In connecting remotely to these same servers (which aren't getting production traffic, so I'm the only person connecting to them), I get seemingly random disconnects via IMAP, always coinciding with a "MySQL server has gone away" error in the logs. This is non-production, so I'm happy to turn on whatever debugging would be useful. Here's doveconf -n from the box the tcpdump was on. [Dovecot] Some Dovecot LDA version sends MDN rather than DSN for overquota.

It appears that there is some version of the Dovecot LDA that is sending an RFC 3798 MDN rather than an RFC 3464 DSN to report non-delivery to a user who is over quota. See <https://bugs.launchpad.net/mailman/+bug/693134> for a discussion of this and <https://bugs.launchpad.net/mailman/+bug/693134/+attachment/1773018/+files/A…> for the actual MDN message. The issue is that apparently a user was over quota and Dovecot returned an MDN with a disposition of deleted. This is intended to mean the the mail was delivered to the user but the user deleted it without reading it. If the message was actually not delivered, this should be reported to the MTA so it can return an appropriate SMTP status, or the LDA should send an RFC 3464 DSN with an action of failed. Note that I do not actually use the Dovecot LDA nor do I have any access to the system where the notice in the bug report was received, so I may have incomplete information and this may not be relevant to current versions of Dovecot, but I think it is wrong for Dovecot to report over quota non-delivery via an MDN. -- Mark Sapiro <mark(a)msapiro.net> The highway is for gamblers, San Francisco Bay Area, California better use your sense - B. This can be useful to check if a hash generated by another program can be verified by Dovecot without any errors. Hi, we have experienced some erratic behavior from Dovecot 2.0.15 if a user's INBOX is shared. Some folders of user1, including the INBOX, have been shared using these IMAP commands: . login user1 XXXXXX . setacl INBOX user2 lrwstiekx . setacl box-a user2 lrwstiekx Now if we use telnet to log in as user2 and select "shared/user1", it will contain the same mails as "shared/user1/INBOX". The really strange thing is that "SELECT"-ing "shared/user1" succeeds only if it is the first command afted logging in. If it not the first command (if e. g. the "LIST" or "SELECT" command has already been used), then dovecot will report that the mailbox does not exist. As a result, user agents like Thunderbird will behave very erratically in this setup. They may show both mailboxes ("shared/user1" and "shared/user1/INBOX") with the same mails, but will not always succeed to download mails for "shared/user1". We were able to reproduce this behavior with a quite simple configuration (see further below), so I doubt that the problem is in the configuration. So, is this a bug in Dovecot? I am not quite sure how exactly it should behave, but it definitely does not seem right this way. Since changeset 8a63f621bd2e I'm one step closer to the perfect working setup. I'm sharing one GID per domain, all it's alias names and accounts. I think a mail_attachment_dir_mode setting could help to work around this problem. Dunno what would be a good default value. In a mailbox that has ACL restrictions on both DELETE and EXPUNGE (i.e. no 'e' or 't' rights), I see the following: 3 UID STORE 3173 (UNCHANGEDSINCE 353) +FLAGS \deleted 3 OK Store completed. (UID 3173 is not flagged \deleted) [...] 6 UID EXPUNGE 1:* 6 OK Expunge completed. (At least 1 UID is flagged \deleted in mailbox) Shouldn't these commands be returning "NO" instead of "OK"? RFC 3501 [6.4.6] for STORE: NO - store error: can't store that data and RFC RFC 3501 [6.4.3] for EXPUNGE: NO - expunge failure: can't expunge (e.g., permission denied) Additionally, RFC 5530 [3] provides the NOPERM response code: NOPERM The access control system (e.g., Access Control List (ACL), see [RFC 4314]) does not permit this user to carry out an operation, such as selecting or creating a mailbox. C: f select "/archive/projects/experiment-iv" S: f NO [NOPERM] Access denied My reading of this is that NOPERM should be returned for ANY ACL prohibited action, not just for selecting or creating a mailbox. Dovecot 2.0.12 does not return NOPERM for DELETE/EXPUNGE actions (at a minimum) that are prohibited. Thoughts? michael

Hello, (recent 2.1alpha2 variant - my test setup known to Timo). No time to diagnose in depth at the moment, but I just noticed that SEARCHing in virtual mailboxes seems not to create lucene index content of its own but use those of referenced mailboxes? The problem is that no new indexing takes place. Example: with INBOX INBOX.in% all in dovecot-virtual, for a given query I only get matches from those mailboxes searched in previously. Regards, Lutz

Hi, while trying to investigate the bug I reported last week, I found that there is a broken boundary check in client_find_namespace in src/imap/imap-commands-util.c. The code is: /* make sure two hierarchy separators aren't next to each others */ for (p = storage_name+1; *p != '\0'; p++) { if (p[0] == ns->real_sep && p[-1] == ns->real_sep) { client_send_tagline(cmd, "NO Invalid mailbox name."); return NULL; } } The loop iterates over the string storage_name starting from its second byte. However, the string may be "". This is the case if you select the root of a namespace, like in "SELECT shared" or "SELECT shared/user1". In that case, the code will read past the end of the buffer from random memory until it finds a zero byte or a duplicate separator. Hi, in seldom cirumstances it's possible that the imap-process is crashing without write something usefule into the logfile. a) User foo exists, is happy and everything's alright b) He had a shared folder given from bar c) In our setup we have mailforwarding adresses without a valid $home in LDAP c) if user bar is changed from a user with into a mailforwarding adress, the user foo won't have an entry for $home any more, but still exists in LDAP. d) If foo logs in, dovecot's exploring the shared folders given from the non-existing user bar. [Dovecot] force-resync fails to recover all messages in mdbox

To my understanding, when using mdbox, doveadm force-resync should be able to recover all the messages from the storage files alone, though of course losing all metadata except the initial delivery folder. However, this does not seem to be the case. For me, force-resync creates only partial indices that lose messages. The message contents are of course still in the storage files, but dovecot just doesn't seem to be aware of some of them after recreating the indices. Here is an example. I created a test mdbox by syncing a mailing list folder from a mbox location: $ dsync -m haskell-cafe backup mdbox:~/dbox Then I switched the location to the new mdbox: $ /usr/sbin/dovecot -n # 2.0.15: /etc/dovecot/dovecot.conf # OS: Linux 3.2.0-0.bpo.1-amd64 x86_64 Debian wheezy/sid mail_fsync = never mail_location = mdbox:~/dbox mail_plugins = zlib passdb { driver = pam } plugin { sieve = ~/etc/sieve/dovecot.sieve sieve_dir = ~/etc/sieve zlib_save = bz2 zlib_save_level = 9 } protocols = " imap" ssl_cert = </etc/ssl/certs/dovecot.pem ssl_key = </etc/ssl/private/dovecot.pem userdb { driver = passwd } protocol lda { mail_plugins = zlib sieve } Then I checked the number of messages we had in the new location: $ doveadm search all | wc 93236 186472 3625098 This was indeed the correct number, so the sync was fine: $ grep -c '^From .*..:..:.. ....$' ../mbox/haskell-cafe 93237 Then I removed all the indices and rebuilt them: $ mkdir bak $ mv mailboxes bak $ mv storage/dovecot.map.index* bak/ $ doveadm force-resync inbox doveadm(la): Warning: mdbox /home/la/dbox/storage: rebuilding indexes And what have we now: $ doveadm search all | wc 43864 87728 1699590 Somehow dovecot lost over half of the messages! This is really worrisome. It should always be possible to extract the plain mail content out from the storage, but currently it only _looks_ like it is possible: you get a problem in the indices, rebuild them, and then later migrate somewhere else. If you don't notice that you are missing mails, you may then eventually destroy the original mdbox storage files, thinking that their content is now safely elsewhere, when it really isn't. Lauri

Hi, I use dsync to backup mailboxes from mbox format to mdbox on a remote system. The first run for a user with dsync is OK, but during the second there are lots of the following errors: dsync-remote(user): Error: Can't delete mailbox directory Example: Mailbox has children, delete them first I see no way how I could influence the order dsync deletes mailboxes. [Dovecot] converting from mbox to maildir ?

Hello We are planning to convert our mailhub ( freebsd 7.4 ) from mbox format to maildir format. I've read the documentation and performed some tests on another machine it is a bit long ... I would like some feedback from guys who did this operation and need some advice on what to convert first ? - first convert INBOX then convert IMAP folders ? - first convert IMAP folders then convert INBOX ? the machine use real users thru openldap ( pam_ldap + nss_ldap ) another problem is disk space. The users's email data takes about 2 Terabytes of data and I cannot duplicate as I only have 3 Tb on the raid array of the server. My idea is to use one of our NFS netapp filer during the convertion to throw the result of the convertion on an NFS mounted directory. Anyone did this before ? If yes I would be greatly interrested by their experience Thank you

[Dovecot] Renaming user account / mailbox

Hello, I am running dovecot-2.0.13-1_128.el5 x86_64 RPM on CentOS 5.7. All accounts are virtual, hosted on LDAP Server. We are using Maildir mailboxes. The question: What is the process to rename an existing account/mailbox? I would like to rename userx with email: userx(a)example.com to ux(a)example.com with a mailbox of ux (currently: userx) Of course the idea is that new mail will continue to be delivered to the same mailbox, although it has been renamed. How can I achieve it? Would it be enough (after changing the associated data in the associated LDAP entry) to simply rename the virtual user directory name, e.g. from /home/vmail/userx to /home/vmail/ux ?
