Hello, I have been running some tests on a new Dovecot v1.0.13 server and have seen the following message appear in the logs a few times. [Dovecot] Problems with dovecot deliver.

Hello all. I am using dovecot 1.1.rc4. Some of my mail deliver without errors. [Dovecot] Multiple auth client sockets

I use two seperate Postfix instances as MSAs (so that different policies are simpler to configure), and both of them require Dovecot SASL support. Since Postfix' smtpd is chrooted (at least in the Debian package), the client socket needs to be somewhere under the instance's queue_directory. This means I need two different auth client socket paths. When I simply specify two "client { ... }" in dovecot.conf, the second takes precedence over the first. Besides using a second dovecot instance, which I'd like to avoid, what ways are there to run a second client socket? Ulrich

[Dovecot] BUG: messages created with permissions not respecting umask

Using dovecot 1.0rc15, together with postfix and dovecot-lda. umask is set to 0007. This should ensure directories and files get created with read/write permissions for both user and group. However, dovecot-lda writes files with 600 permissions, instead of 660. So dovecot does not seem to respect the umask configuration property for local mail delivery. In my particular case, I have vmail:vmail own the mail directories, and a backup user part of the vmail group. However the backup user cannot read the mails and thus back them up properly. Suggestions: - respect the umask for file delivery as well - alternatively, take the parent directory's permissions, strip executable bits, and apply to file Thanks Thomas

[Dovecot] 1.1 and the zlib plugin

Hello, I've been playing around with using namespaces to change the way messages are stored. My idea was to use mbox for archival stuff, like this: namespace private { separator = . hidden = no inbox = yes prefox = location = maildir:%h/Maildir } namespace private { separator = . hidden = no prefix = "INBOX.Archive." location = mbox:%h/Maildir/Archive } This works *GREAT*, and I'm really pleased with it. However, it occurred to me that for deeply frozen archives, it might be nice to gzip them. Conveniently, there's the zlib plugin. From what I could tell from the documentation, the compressed mbox names must end in ".gz", so I thought I could simply go into ~/Maildir/Archive and gzip everything. But when I did that, Dovecot started behaving strangely. First of all, the result of LIST shows the files like this: * LIST (\NoInferiors \Marked) "." "INBOX.Archive.Friends.gz" Which is obviously wrong. When I try to SELECT it, I get this: ? SELECT "INBOX.Archive.Friends.gz" ? NO Mailbox doesn't exist: Friends/gz Which seems to indicate that Dovecot is treating the dot in the extension as the separator (understandably), and failing. However, if I leave off the extension, I get this: ? SELECT "INBOX.Archive.Friends" ? NO Mailbox doesn't exist: Friends Which seems to indicate that Dovecot isn't translating "Friends" into "Friends.gz" for some reason. Then I remembered that in the ChangeLog, back in May, the zlib plugin was changed to look for the zlib header rather than the Z flag. I assume that was for using it with Maildirs, but I figured it was worth a shot. So I renamed the Friends.gz file to remove the extension. But that just gives me an error message: ? SELECT "INBOX.Archive.Friends" ? NO Mailbox isn't a valid mbox file It seems like loading the zlib plugin either doesn't have any effect, or I'm not doing it right. I have it in the config file along with other plugins that work just fine: mail_plugins = fts fts_squat zlib And when I check that with dovecot -p, it shows up: mail_plugins: fts fts_squat zlib There's no entry in the plugin {} section of the config file for the zlib plugin... but I assume that none is necessary. Dovecot (v1.1.rc8) died tonight, with an error about time moving backwards by 4398 seconds. I can see from logs that this has happend a few times before with the imap processes, without me noticing. I sure noticed the master process missing, though :-). I was puzzled that it was always 4398 seconds, in particular because this server runs an NTP daemon. A little searching for this problem shows that it is an issue with the Linux kernel gettimeofday(), see e.g. http://lkml.org/lkml/2007/8/23/96 Below is a patch (untested) to work around this issue. Do you see something wrong with this approach, apart from the uglyness? I just picked the 4395-4400 values by chance. Can you figure out how big the window should be? Hi. At http://wiki.dovecot.org/ManageSieve#line-229 , I want to download the patch that's supposed to fix two problems in Avelsieve. Unfortunately, when I click on the link to the patch, I always get an error message: You are not allowed to do AttachFile on this page. Annoying. [Dovecot] newbie: problem with IMAPS + mutt + Thunderbird

Hi, I'm a Dovecot newbie and have some problems with the configuration/the resulting interoperability. My setup looks like this: I receive my mail using qmail-ldap and sort it with a number of means into ~/Mailbox/ (= INBOX) and ~/Mail/folder/ for various values of 'folder' (generally one folder per mailing list). The sorting is done via .qmail-* files, LDAP entries, and procmail (this is a "legacy" setup that I'd rather not change too much). I usually access my mail using 'mutt' on the local machine (Debian 4.0), and everything is fine. I'd like to be able to access the same email using Thunderbird over IMAPS as well, to gain foreign character support (ie, Chinese), while continuing to use mutt as my main MUA. There are, so far, two problems with this setup: 1. I can't find the folders in ~/Mail/. As an interim solution, I symlinked them from my ~/Mailbox/ dir, but this is _dead_ugly_. 2. (MUCH more serious) As soon as I access the email using Thunderbird, Dovecot moves all new mail from somefolder/new to somefolder/cur, thereby making mutt flag all my new mail as 'O' ("old") which was flagged 'N' ("new") before. If I remember which the new mails were, I can flag them as 'N' in mutt, and they get moved to .../new again, but this isn't usually the case because my mailboxen are often large (> 10.000 messages), and it's undone as soon as I access the mailbox with Thunderbird (over IMAPS). I also have a wish list. Both Mutt and Dovecot (can) make use of index files to speed mail access. It would be great if this could be unified so that both programs use the same index files (in a consistent manner, of course). [Dovecot] 1.1 namespaces and message corruption

Hello, I've been trying out the new dovecot's namespace support, and I'm having some issues moving messages between namespaces. Specifically, when I move some messages from a Maildir-based namespace to an mbox-based namespace, the message gets corrupted: its contents are removed, and an entirely empty message is added to the destination mailbox. This is 100% repeatable (some messages just *cannot* be copied intact). I have two namespaces, set up like so: namespace private { # Default separator = . hidden = no inbox = yes prefix = location = maildir:%h/Maildir } namespace private { separator = . hidden = no prefix = "INBOX.ArchiveTest." location = mbox:%h/Maildir/Archive } All I do is tell my client (mutt) to copy a message from a folder in the maildir namespace into a folder in the mbox namespace. Does anyone know what might be going wrong or how I can even debug this? No error messages of any kind are showing up in the dovecot log file, and the mail_debug setting doesn't seem to give me any useful information. [Dovecot] Poor pop3 over nfs performance

Hi, About a week ago I upgraded our reasonably heavily loaded mail servers from a pretty recent courier version to dovecot-1.1rc10. IMAP performance on dovecot is amazing, however POP3 performance is worse than courier :-( I have uploaded some munin graphs taken today to http://linweb.atlas.pipex.net/dovecot/; the dovecot server is handling about 2000 pop logins/sec and 300 imap sessions (but these are negligible in terms of nfs ops). The courier server is handling a similar number of pop logins/sec but no imap (slightly less traffic overall but a similar number of logins). As you can see, dovecot seems to issue an awful lot more read requests than courier. The big spike at 10am is where I tried setting the :INDEX=MEMORY flag on dovecot as I assumed that's what courier is doing. I've also attached graphs of the relative network usage - as you can see, dovecot is using up to 100mbps whereas courier is using less than 10mbps; I believe this is due to the read. I initially assumed this high read load was due to courier building up its index files, but this has now been happening for about a week with little variation. The servers are both centos 5.0 (perhaps 5.1 actually, but with the latest centosplus kernel which fixes the nfs lookup bug in the standard kernels); and are not running any other nfs programs. The NFS server is a high performance NAS unit - no issues there. We're only using Maildirs; relevant config options are: mmap_disable: yes dotlock_use_excl: no mail_nfs_storage: yes mail_nfs_index: yes lock_method: dotlock maildir_copy_preserve_filename: yes Thanks, Mark

Hi Timo, Regarding our conversation in IRC, I'm attaching the uidlist and copying in the original message just in case. I'm using dovecot version 1.0.13 on reiserfs on hardware RAID-0, but I'm getting the following error in the logs every time one user tries to access his old mails in the .Sent directory: dovecot: 2008-06-23 15:09:46 Error: IMAP(marek.chajecki): Invalid data in file /var/mail/Maildir/marek.chajecki/.Sent/dovecot-uidlist As a result he fails to get access to the emails in this folder. I've googled a bit and read that deleting the uidlist makes dovecot recreate it, but after some time the same thing happens. It's a new hard drive, so I don't think this is a hard drive fault. Some additional info: this server is being used by about 200 users who get about 100 emails daily each one of them. Hi, I would like to use Dovecot as IMAP Server in order to Develope a Squirrel Webmail. I have a problem with the Dovecot configuration; I have my Postfix server in the host: 192.168.100.100, and I have installed Dovecot in the host: 192.168.1.253. Everything goes right, but I can't see any mail that I had received in my mailbox. How can I configure the dovecot.conf in order to use an mbox placed in a different host?? Thanks. Hi, I tried the FTS (and FTS Squat) plugin today, and it works as advertised. But: On my 13000 folders with 160000 mails maildir I use for testing, the speed increase is not as big as one would wish (it still takes several minutes to complete a search). Is my assumption correct, that there is no way to do a search over a big IMAP folder hierarchy in a reasonable amount of time, because each folder has to be 'selected', and only one folder can be selected at once? [Dovecot] Quota Check: fs with multiple "noenforcing" mount point

Hi, It seems my previous mail has been lost, I apologize if this is a duplicate. I am using Dovecot 1.1.1 with user's INBOX in /var/mail and other folders in their home directories. I have setup file system quota on /var/mail to limit their usage. I would like dovecot to display such information in IMAP client and ignore all others. OS: Solaris 10 Dovecot version : 1.1.1 file system of /var/mail : NFS from Solaris file system of /home : other NFS server that not support rquotad. Here is my setting that works: ---------------------------- plugin { quota = fs:INBOX:mount=/var/mail quota2 = fs:home:noenforcing:mount=/home/h1 } ------------------------------------------ Unfortunately, I have many different mount points for different users, so I changed my settings to: --------------------------- plugin { quota = fs:INBOX:mount=/var/mail quota2 = fs:home:noenforcing:mount=/home/h1 quota3 = fs:home:noenforcing:mount=/home/h2 quota4 = fs:home:noenforcing:mount=/home/h3 } ---------------------------------------------- The result is... Devocolt is not able to get quota information anymore. Any suggestions?

The error message below appears in the system log quite frequently. I have run a test which shows that this message is due to 2 or more users accessing the same mail (i.e connecting using the same userid). This happens for various reasons including the fact that some users have their client machine set up (typically using Thunderbird) with more than one account within a single Thunderbird configuration. Thus, more than one person may be reading or sending mail from a single Dovecot account. [Dovecot] Dovecot index, NFS, and multiple architectures

Hi all, I crawled through the archives for a bit but didn't see anything helpful, so I apologize if this has already been addressed. We've been dying to move from Courier to Dovecot across our whole infrastructure for quite some time, but until recently our setup wasn't possible until this happened: "Dovecot allows mailboxes and their indexes to be modified by multiple computers at the same time, while still performing well. This means that Dovecot works with NFS and clustered filesystems." Now that NFS is officially supported, we figured why not make the switch. All of our mail touches NFS in some way, so we need to check on the stability before completely migrating. In test trials we're having issues with the NFS'd index becoming corrupted. Here's the setup: * Linux workstations running Fedora 8/9 i386 and a locally called Dovecot 1.0.14 * NFS'd homedir with Maildir setup * NFS is on Solaris 9 sparcv9 (64bit) running Dovecot 1.0.14 Now this setup is just a test example and not exactly what we'll be running in production, but it tipped up the problem either way. Since the index is shared by both the Linux i386 machine and the sparc64 Solaris machine, if mail is accessed from both, lets say with Pine for example, the index becomes corrupted and breaks. As long as only one architecture only ever touches it there are no issues. I'm assuming this is an endian issue, which would make the most sense. Is there a way around this with flags or server options? Is this something that has maybe been addressed in 1.1.0? Unfortunately, we are not going to be able to move to Dovecot across all of our systems until this is no longer an issue. We run a lot of mixed environments that have everything from Linux i386/x86_64 to Solaris 9 64 to Windows. If a user accesses IMAP from a Windows box, then logs into the front end which is a Linux x86_64 box and runs Pine, and all of this is on a Solaris sparc NFS system, we're going to have serious issues with the index. ;) Any help would be appreciated. [Dovecot] Keeping \Seen flag private

Hi all, I wanna to set up shared folders for a couple of users and I'd like that everyone could keep the \Seen flag as private. So if user #1 reads some messages and user #2 not, those messages appear as "unseen" to #2 and "seen" to #1. I've implemented shared folders using namespaces with every user having their own "control" and "private" directories. But all the flags (\Seen included) are "shared". Am I on the right path? [Dovecot] managesieve server aware?

Just upgraded to Dovecot 1.1 and thought I'd try out managesieve plugin. My situation is I have two front end proxy boxes and four storage nodes in the back. I have been able to load the managesieve plugin just like I should on the storage nodes, but not on the proxy boxes. My proxy boxes have multiple server sections to deal with unique configurations for 5-7 different mail domains: server mail.host1.com { listen a.b.c.d protocols = imap imaps pop3 pop3s ..... } server mail.host2.com { listen a.b.c.e protocols = imap pop3 .... } If I add the managesieve to the protocols line like I do on my storage nodes, I get this: Error: Can't access mail module directory: /usr/local/lib/dovecot/managesieve: No such file or directory Funny thing is /usr/local/lib/dovecot/managesieve does not exist on the the proxy boxes. It also does not exist on the storage boxes where managesieve loaded just fine. Anybody have any ideas or suggestions? -c
