[Dovecot] Spliting Folders for Efficiency

Dear Timo, Would there be any sense in giving Dovecot the option to split folders into multiple subfolders when they reached a specified size (probably message count) limit? Dovecot would monitor folders and when they reached, say, 10,000 messages, silently split the folder on the filesystem to ensure that access remains fast. I know that Dovecot scales very well but this would give practically unlimited storage capability and also keep things fast. You could even have it so that the latest 100 messages are kept in their own folder for fast access. .Folder.new .Folder.cur .Folder.tmp could become: .Folder__1.new .Folder__1.cur .Folder__1.tmp and .Folder__2.new .Folder__2.cur .Folder__2.tmp with Dovecot merging them before display as just "Folder" within the mail client. This could be further extended so that Dovecot could be configured to store 'old' message folders in a separate location. We could then have slower+cheaper+larger storage mounted so that 'old mail' does not take up the expensive local SCSI disks on the machine. Mail from 2 years ago is much less likely to be accessed than mail from the last week. This would provide very neat behind-the-scenes archiving functionality. [Dovecot] Feature Missing OUTBOX Folder

Hi Dovecot People, i have switched my system from courier-imap to dovecot and iam quite happy with it, the performance is well and i had nearly no problems. One little feature iam missing is in Courier i had a folder called "Outbox" there i could paste mails which i want to sent out. In some networks its not always available to sent mails via port 21, i know i could just set up my email server to another port but it was a nice feature. Is this a big afford or is it just alittle hack ? could it done via a little plugin ? Thanks Timo & all others for the great work ! Frank

Hi, I am using dovecot 1.0.10 and pysieved, in a master/slave cluster with ldap (auth_bind=yes). For conceptuals reasons, i would like to keep on the same partition the mailstore + sieve scripts. I have try to set "sieve" and "home" variables under the "plugin" section with an absolute path, and i have tried to override home variable in user_attrs (dovecot-ldap.conf) as well with an absolute path, but in vain. Is there a solution ? sam

[Dovecot] Bug? Expunging Symlinked Maildir w/ Lazy_expunge Enabled

Hi all, Using Dovecot 1.0.3 on RedHat Enterprise 5 (kernel 2.6.18-8.1.6.el5PAE), and NFS storage, we symlinked a Maildir folder: /mailstore/user/Maildir/.Junk -> /junkstore/user/Junkmaildir Everything works fine, until we try to expunge, which produces: A04 NO BUG: Unknown internal error This only happens if "lazy_expunge" is enabled: mail_plugins = quota imap_quota acl lazy_expunge lazy_expunge = .EXPUNGED/ .EXPUNGED/ .EXPUNGED/ Lazy_expunge works great on non-symlinked folders. We tried version 1.1 alpha2, which actually crashes in this scenario. The only fix we've found is to disable "lazy_expunge". Attached is our "dovecot -n" config. Anyone have an idea what might be causing this or a workaround? Thanks! Does the keyword/action discard work by default or is there something I have to do in the configuration to get to work... maybe I missed something on http://wiki.dovecot.org/LDA/Sieve I have the following rule: if anyof ( header :contains ["Subject"] ["Test Discard"] ) { discard; stop; } but it delivers to INBOX with or w/o the "stop;". If I change the rule to if anyof ( header :contains ["Subject"] ["Test Discard"] ) { fileinto "spam"; stop; } the message will deliver into my spam folder which makes me think I am doing something wrong with "discard". Using 1.0.2 sieve plug-in. Thanks.

[Dovecot] Sorting a folder (by THREAD) takes a long time

My email workflow with Dovecot is that mail gets delivered to INBOX, where I handle it and then move it into a folder called archive. I have alpine set to use the Default sort of "THREAD" of a folder. After moving a (few) mail(s) from INBOX to archive, archive takes a long time (10-50s) to load while alpine tells me: [Sorting "archive" ... ] (I can do the IMAP traces, but I figure alpine's terminology is going to be so similar to IMAP terminology that it should be straightforward enough for Timo to know what I'm talking about.) I don't actually know enough about Dovecot to say for sure what makes this slow, but maybe it's just indexes not being updated? What might be making this slow, and what hope is there for it being fast? (-: It seems like the really nice thing to do would be, after the save, in the background examine the archive folder and update whatever caches need to be updated. The more work that happens while I'm not waiting, the happier I'll be! (Same goes for my mom, and the other less-technical users of Dovecot.) Is this the kind of thing I could write a plugin for...? -- Asheesh. -- It seems to make an auto driver mad if he misses you.

Hi! Do you guys/girls (whichever you prefer) know if it's possible (i.e. in some semitransparent/easy way) to incorporate an online backup system? If the mail is older than a set amount of days it gets compressed. I want my mail storage size to shrink but on the other hand I want to keep the mails I get and have them easily readable :) I'm thinking of symlinks and some kind of gzip fuse filesystem... Please save me ,) /yosh

I'm talking about mbox Sent folder, where some mailers append through imap server a copy of each message they send. Sometimes, just three header lines got appended instead of the whole mail message, such as: >From xxxxxxxx(a)xxxxxx.xxxxxx.xxxxx.xx.xx Fri May 23 12:30:14 2008 X-UID: 2852 Status: RO This happened in the past (dovecot-1.1-beta/rc with Evolution and with Thunderbird), and happened last week with dovecot-1.1-rc5 (+ last week hg patches). [Dovecot] Expire plugin with Mysql

Hey guys, got a question about the expire plugin. According to the wiki, the expire plugin "keeps an internal database (Berkeley DB or SQL)". I was wondering what fields in the mysql table are needed for expire to work. I assume it is setup is similar to the quota dict setup, so was just wondering what fields are required (i.e: select_field, where_field, username_field, for quota). Thanks

[Dovecot] FTS/squat search indexes built when?

I know that a given search index doesn't get built the first time until you do an actual search on it from an IMAP client. I don't much care about that; I'm the only user, and I don't create new folders too often. At worst, I could create a script to go search every folder once. But what I'm not clear about: Does it then get updated on every delivery by LDA? Or does the index also need to get updated when I do a search, assuming there's been at least one message delivered since the last search? Jay Levitt

[Dovecot] plus addressing bug in dovecot 1.1.x?

I had recently upgraded from Dovecot 1.0.14 to 1.1.0, and then to 1.1.1. Ever since the upgrade to 1.1.0, I noticed that "plus addressing" has failed. In case I'm using a foreign phrase, this is the concept of sending an e-mail to "user+spam(a)domain.com", and having dovecot (dovecot LDA, specifically), deliver this to the "spam" submailbox to "user(a)domain.com". I've been using this successfully since 1.0.3. When I upgraded to 1.1.0, I noticed that e-mails were no longer being delivered to the submailboxes as they had been (though they would arrive in the central INBOX). I checked the "dovecot-deliver.log", and I noticed that, ever since I had brought up 1.1.0, I would see: save failed to spam: Unknown namespace ("spam" is the submailbox) After the upgrade to 1.1.1, I still would see these messages (and behavior). I have since installed 1.0.15. The plus addressing now works again, as it had been. With all of these "upgrades" and "downgrades", the config file has remained exactly the same. There have been no other changes to any components on the host system (i.e., new OS-es, new postfix, etc.). Thoughts? Is this a known issue? - Jon

[Dovecot] Server power loss and "Dovecot is already running with PID xxx"

Hi, I'm running Dovecot 1.0.7 (with various patches) on CentOS 5.2. The server has suffered a couple of power loss events. Dovecot is run as a standalone server. The problem is that dovecot refuses to start up at boot because the PID file from before the power loss is left behind. The message is as follows: $ /sbin/service dovecot start Starting Dovecot Imap: Error: Dovecot is already running with PID 10825 (read from /var/run/dovecot/master.pid) Fatal: Invalid configuration in /etc/dovecot.conf [FAILED] (Note: there is nothing wrong in the configuration file so the error message is somewhat misleading.) I looked at the release notes of 1.0.xx releases and they didn't mention this. Is this already a known problem? This folder was created May 12, well after us starting to use 1.1RC versions. I currently fixed a few hundred of these (out of millions of folders), and whats interesting is that a very large percentage of those (1/3th) is the folder "Apple Mail To Do", created by Mail.App I think. Obviously that same folder is no where near 1/3th of our total folder number, so thats a bit strange. I really doubt this is some local setting issue, because then id see much more of those. Right now it's a tiny fraction of our total folder amount, which leads me to believe it's some weird edge case in the dovecot code. Anyone have any ideas? Cor

[Dovecot] DoveCot IMAP and "inconsistent state" messages

I need some help troubleshooting this problem. It only shows up with IMAP connections. I initially thought it was related to SquirrelMail (because it gives me an 'EXPUNGE' error), but after attempting to send IMAP commands directly to the server as shown below, I'm thinking there is something else going on. The system configuration is PostFix as the MTA delivering to procmail in the mailbox (maildir format), with Dovecot handling POP3 and IMAP Postfix is version 2.3.3 Dovecot is version 1.0.rc15 procmail is version 3.22 2001/09/10 kernel is 2.6.18-53.1.14.el5, CentOS 5 There is additional info about the system configuration after the command sequence and log entries below. [Dovecot] 1.1.1-1 gotcha with Fedora Rawhide package

I just installed the Rawhide package on my CentOS 5 system. The one item that bit me is that the config file defaults to using interface "[::]" so it only listens on IPv6. (This is from a patch in the package that changes the upstream default of "*", so it only affects those using the Fedora package.) I've just updated from 1.0.14 to 1.1.1 (Maildirs). According to <URL:http://wiki.dovecot.org/Upgrading/1.1>, "dovecot-uidlist file is in a new format. The old format is automatically converted to new one." [Dovecot] v1.1.1: Some files not created with dovecot-shared permissions

Hi, I use dovecot-shared to add read permissions to the group in my mail server, which uses virtual users. This is only to ease backups. However, a few files are not created with the permissions in dovecot-shared. I've seen this happen to 'subscriptions', 'maildirfolder' (when dovecot-shared exists; the change to correctly create maildirfolder in this case is very recent), and possibly 'maildirsize' (I'm not sure about this one, it might be exim that is creating it with wrong permissions.) This has been tested in recent snapshot package, from the Debian repository listed at http://wiki.dovecot.org/PrebuiltBinaries. [Dovecot] Upgrade to 1.1 maildir & shared folders problems

Hi I configured Exim with dovecot LDA and added quota (dict/mysql). It works but it seems that dovecot is not reporting situation back to exim process - it looks like Exim returns OK(accepted) to smtp sender before the message is actually delivered - if the quota is exceeded then LDA drops the mail and sends DSN. [Dovecot] group ownership of new shared folders

Between versions 1.0.4 and 1.0.5 there were some changes to the way dovecot-shared group ownership is propogated into new maildirs. Changing the group of new_dir/{tmp,new,cur} was added, but changing the group of new_dir itself was removed. As far as I can tell, this latter change may have been accidental. [Dovecot] No log for hitting login_max_processes_count?

I think today just due to increased use, my mail servers hit login_max_processes_count. It wasn't obvious what was happening, logins just weren't acting like they should and sometimes would get disconnected before given a prompt from the server. Something made me think to check if I had too many of certain dovecot processes and I found I had 128 imap-login processes on both servers, but nothing in the logs seemed to point that out for me. Should there be? It would have been alot easier to debug. Also, this seems to be from general use, doesn't seem like a DoS, so is this just a setting I should keep an eye on and increase it by reasonable amounts as needed? Thanks.
