[Dovecot] compressed mbox patch

[Dovecot] BUG: messages created with permissions not respecting umask

Using dovecot 1.0rc15, together with postfix and dovecot-lda. umask is set to 0007. This should ensure directories and files get created with read/write permissions for both user and group. However, dovecot-lda writes files with 600 permissions, instead of 660. So dovecot does not seem to respect the umask configuration property for local mail delivery. In my particular case, I have vmail:vmail own the mail directories, and a backup user part of the vmail group. However the backup user cannot read the mails and thus back them up properly. Suggestions: - respect the umask for file delivery as well - alternatively, take the parent directory's permissions, strip executable bits, and apply to file Thanks Thomas

Hi, before I start to write a lengthy email about something that isn't really possible anyway: can I make Postfix use Dovecot's LDA and start it with different user IDs? My scenario: Dovecot authenticates users for Postfix and itself using Postgresql. Mails for two domains should be stored under /srv/<domain>/<user> (which is the location returned by my user_sql query and mail_location). When my clients login (with usernames of the form 'user@domain'), Dovecot creates/opens the correct mailboxes for them, but I can't get LDA to deliver to these mailboxes. Whatever I try, I am always running into some kind of permission problems (either for the mailboxes, or for auth_socket). I want to use a unique UID for every virtual domain, so I guess LDA needs to have permissions for every corresponding mailbox *and* Dovecot's auth_socket_path. Is there a good solution for this which doesn't involve severe security implications? J. -- If all my friends had Playstations I would buy a Nintendo to prove my individuality. [Dovecot] Another numptie question - making maildirs for shared mailboxes.

Hi there, Sorry to have so much trouble with my Dovecot setup & to ask so many questions, but I'm having some problems with shared folders. I've read the thread at <http://dovecot.org/pipermail/dovecot/2005-January/006079.html> and added the following lines to /etc/dovecot.conf: namespace private { separator = / prefix = inbox = yes } namespace public { separator = / prefix = General/ location = maildir:/tmp/dovecot-test/ inbox = no hidden = no } So I create a directory /tmp/dovecot-test/ and an empty file /tmp/dovecot-test/dovecot-shared with liberal (777 & 666 respectively) permissions and then try to subscribe to the "General" folder in Outlook - I get a "failed to subscribe to the folder. The server responded `the mailbox doesn't exist: General`" error message, but cur, new & tmp are created in /tmp/dovecot-test. These subfolders are owned by the user that attempted to subscribe & have 700 permissions; chmod'ing them 777 makes no difference. Since "default_mail_env = maildir:%h/.maildir" in dovecot.conf I make a directory /tmp/dovecot-test/.maildir also containing cur, new, tmp & dovecot-shared. When I select "IMAP folders" in Outlook I am still unable to subscribe to "General" but am now able to subscribe to "General/maildir". The subscribed folder is shown in Outlook underneath the users' Inbox as a sub-folder of general, screenshot at <http://linux.stroller.uk.eu.org/DovecotSharedFolders.png> - see how I can't subscribe to "General" alone, but it is "brought in" by subscribing to "General/maildir"? If I try to copy a test message into General then, after a delay of a minute or so, I get "Can't move the items - this IMAP command could not be sent to the server before the connect was terminated"; if I try to copy the test message into General/maildir then I immediately get "Can't copy the items. The server responded: `Internal error occurred. Refer to server log for more information [2005-12-20 12:05:40]". I've tried tinkering with other directory structures under /tmp/dovecot-test/ with no success - can anyone suggest what I'm doing wrong, please? It's quite important to me that the "General" folder is a fairly high-level one - only one additional folder icon should show up for the users' shared mail. At one point I managed to create a folder General/General, but that's undesirable - the users wouldn't understand the concept of having a folder showing in Outlook that they can't write to, or which is only used as a container for another folder. (In any case, I believe I was still unable to write to it). I was about to say, "I know I could resolve this with the use of a symlink-type shared folder, but that's undesirable because I'd have to manually add the symlink for each user that's added to the system", but writing this it occurs to me that I could resolve that by adding the symlink to the the etc/skel/. Nevertheless, I see the namespaces approach as more elegant, as it allows for different user groups having different shared folders. I'd appreciate any advice - I suspect I'm just getting the directory hierarchies wrong, or the syntax of dovecot.conf wrong AGAIN! If anyone with a working shared folders setup could provide a copy of the appropriate section of dovecot.conf & a listing of the appropriate directories then I'd be EXTREMELY grateful. Stroller.

The search order is as follows. The search stops upon the first successful lookup. (...) o The user(a)domain.tld address, without address exten- sion, is looked up next. o Finally, the recipient @domain is looked up. --- Basicaly this allows to have separate users assigned addresses like j.doe(a)example.com (first account), j.smith(a)example.com (second account) and at the same time to have a "catch all" anything(a)example.com mailbox (for the administrator e.g.). What do I need it for? To have dovecot-lda working. Why? I want Sieve :) The test data may look as follows: account #1: + mail: j.doe(a)example.com + mailAlternateAddress: j.c.doe(a)example.com account #2: + mail: j.smith(a)example.com + mailAlternateAddress: j.t.smith(a)example.com account #3 (administrator): + mail: bofh(a)example.com + mailAlternateAddress: @example.com (means - anything possible) The filter I used is (more or less - for both pass_filter and user_filter): (|(mail=%u)(mailAlternateAddress=%u)(mailAlternateAddress=@%d)) Just for testing purposes I've stripped off some irrelevant data (like checking if the account is active), since that made the filter about 140 characters long ;) The trouble is when there're both a "catch all" and a true account that are linked to different accounts. As an example, if I try to send mail to "j.doe(a)example.com" I receive: dovecot: auth(default): ldap(j.doe(a)example.com): Multiple replies found for user Which is of course true, since the filter returns "account #2" and "account #3". What I'd like to get? I'd like to set the filter to: (|(mail=%u)(mailAlternateAddress=%u)) Where "%u" is expanded to "j.doe(a)example.com" during the first run Then, if dovecot can't find any user that would match this literaly it should retry the search operation, but now with "@example.com" as the "%u". I've tried to fiddle with the filter itself, but I see any reasonable way of doing it. I don't even know if it is possible at all. Could anyone give me a hint? Or maybe it's already on someone's whish list? [Dovecot] quota warning - take 2

Hi, About one month ago, I sent a patch to this list to implement warnings when a user is close to reach his quota. I tried to follow Timo's advice to improve my code, and here (at last) is a new patch. Things I did not fix: - This patch is still for dovecot 1.0, as I will need warnings with dovecot 1.0. I may rewrite it for CVS HEAD in the future but can't promise. - I'm still using system() rather than fork()+exec()+waitpid() since I don't know a good time to run waitpid(). Comments are welcome. [Dovecot] PHP implementation of dovecotpw passwords

I am looking for PHP functions that implement passwords that much the dovecotpw implementation. I downloaded one from PEAR, Crypt_HMAC, but the passwords it generates look nothing like the dovecotpw passwords, which could be my fault because I know nothing about the field. Is there a guide or some library that implements them to match dovecotpw?

Hi, I made a patch against branch-1.0 for SHA256 password hashing support for Dovecot. Courier Authlib supports this hashing scheme and in order to migrate from Courier to Dovecot, I've added SHA256 support to Dovecot. The attached patch is based on BSD licensed code from Olivier Gay (http://www.ouah.org/ogay/sha2/) Changes made by me in Olivier's sha2{.h,.c} code: - Prototype for sha256_transf is added to sha2.h - sha256_get_digest() is added to sha2{.h,.c} - Code for UNROLL_LOOPS is removed - Support for SHA224,SHA384,SHA512 was removed - Functions are renamed to match those in sha1{.h,.c} - SHA256_DIGEST_SIZE is renamed to SHA256_RESULTLEN I can add safe_memset calls if requested. Hi. Does someone make update for `Multiple IP(or Host) listen in dovecot.conf'? I made trivial patch so. But this patch doesn't solve `Support listening in multiple sockets' in TODO. It appends only the capability as multiple listen in dovecot.conf. So, `login_processes_count' becomes ambiguous. In CASE1, login_processes_count = 2, forked imap-login processes are 8. -- samples dovecot.conf applied this patch are following. Hello dovecot users, I have updated the MANAGESIEVE patch to fix the currently known small problems with the protocol implementation. It is designed for rc28, but also compiles cleanly with the current cvs branch_1_0. Change Log V4 ------------- - Added managesieve_implementation_string setting to the managesieve configuration. This can be used to customize the default "IMPLEMENTATION" capability response (as requested by John Peacock). - Denied ANONYMOUS login until proper support is implemented - Fixed problem with authenticate command regarding continued responses. In V3 only initial response would work. Problem was caused by rc2 -> rc28 upgrade. One of the clear reasons why code duplication is a very bad idea. - Fixed readlink bug as indicated by Timo: return value of readlink can also be -1. - Fixed bug in the regular file rescue code, as introduced in the previous version. Used stat instead of lstat. This caused the symlink to be rescued subsequently in the next activation, thus still overwriting the initially rescued script. [Dovecot] Different classes of user

Hello list! Only recently joined, please excuse me if this is a stupid question. I'd like to have 2 classes of user: those with shell accounts, and those without. They'll all have "real" accounts, for which the password can be checked with PAM. I've set up SSL too. What I want to arrange is for users with shell accounts not to be succeed in logging in to Dovecot without using TLS/SSL. I'll have to allow unencrypted logins (for non-shell users), but I want to reject/refuse such a login from someone with a shell account. I've already made my exim do this, with the following logic in my authenticator there: if (pam auth ok) and ((tls) or (user's shell not listed in /etc/shells)) I haven't worked out how to make Dovecot do this, yet. So far I just tried using * as the PAM service name, in the hope that not only would pop3 or imap get passed through, but pop3s and imaps might, and I had a line in my /etc/pam.d/imap and pop like this: auth required pam_succeed_if.so debug shell notin /bin/bash:/bin/sh which worked, but unfortunately also got used for imapS logins. Then I realised this was likely to be the wrong thing anyway, because it would presumably only cover IMAPS on port 993, and not IMAP+TLS on the usual port 143. So I've had a go but got it wrong. [Dovecot] dovecot forward multipart problem

Hi, I experience problems everytime i forward a mail (basically, when forwarding an email containing an attachement). I'm using thunderbird (it does the same with outlook clients) with the forward parameter "as attachement" instead of "inline". (Using the inline parameters works fine). When i forward a mail with attachements (eg a jpeg file), the attachements file is displayed in base64 instead, and is impossible to detach/save. I'm using dovecot 1.0.rc22-1 (debian package) on debian etch, x86 SMP box with maildir format on a ext3 partition. I'm using postfix currently 2.3.4-3, i have tried different version of dovecot (from rc16 i think) and postfix (from 2.2.?) and i suspect the deliver to be the origin of the problem. I think it is the same problem than here http://dovecot.org/pipermail/dovecot/2006-July/014786.html , my "From" headers are badly duplicated. Could this be fixed before the dovecot 1.0 release ? [Dovecot] Convert plugin mbox to maildir has no effect

Convert plugin seems to have no effect with dovecot-1.0.rc26 and my settings. When a user log, maildir creation is successful, but no mbox conversion occur. New incoming mails are dropped into maildir, but I cant access those in Mbox file. [Dovecot] SQL mail storage

I wasted some time yesterday and today implementing a SQL storage plugin. It seems to be working, but: - Saving new messages is done in a regular INSERT statement, which is bad. PostgreSQL has at least this COPY TO command which could be used instead. - It breaks in stress testing - It's not that well optimized. Especially it could support caching some commonly requested fields (same as dovecot.index.cache file). - Currently works only with PostgreSQL. Nothing is committed to CVS yet. I'm not sure if I should even do that. I'm not sure if those lib-sql API changes were that great. Maybe there's a better way.. Hi ! I am still a bit annoyed with the way that Sieve plugin handles multiple delivery into the same folder. For reference : http://www.dovecot.org/list/dovecot/2007-January/019029.html Summary : When a same message (same message-id) is to be delivered twice into the same mailbox, it is delivered twice while I think that the second one should be discarded. Here are a few test cases : - you subscribe to a few mailing lists on topic "X" and deliver all mails from those mailing lists in the same folder. You get twice the mails that are crossposted. - you subscribe to one mailing list and read it regulary so you don't care of receiving messages from this mailing list (you are in Cc when someone answers) in your INBOX. You match on To or Cc to put everything in the same folder. You get messages twice when you are put personally in Cc. - you place a forward from one account to two of your accounts (one is keeping backup, the other don't but delivers faster). You receive all messages twice. With procmail, I handle those (real) cases with formail. I can't with Sieve. I don't see any interest in receiving the same message twice into the same mailbox. Hi all, I'm new to the list, so ... hello everybody :-) Let's go to the point... I'm implementing quota over imap support in my mail server, so since a number of days I'm tring to upgrade to the new 1.x version (debian sarge) ... After having a number of troubles using the debian backport packege I am now using the -rc28 package that I have built by myself... [Dovecot] Mailbox isn't a valid mbox file

Keep getting this error within Squirrelmail (and other clients) on one particular user's mailbox file: ERROR: Could not complete request. Query: SELECT "INBOX.Backup" Reason Given: Mailbox isn't a valid mbox file I've snipped the first and last message off of it, still no love. mailserver# cat FILE | od -c | less 0000000 F r o m p r o m o t i o n s @ 0000020 e m e s s a g e . c i s c o . c So apparently there isn't a control character in the first message that'd be causing this either. Hello funkypunky drunky, on AIX dovecot plugins (which are shared objects = .so) are a little bit problematic. It is not enough to activate run time linking by using -brtl and make the main program (dovecot) to be able to use shared objects. When a share object does function calls back into the main program, all these functions (=symbols) in dovecot have to be explicitly exported. Otherwise you see "signal 11" or so. Because this is very fiddly, there is a linker flag -bexpall to export all symbols of the main program (dovecot)... but this does seemingly not work with symbols defined in static libraries (.a). While dovecot build creates static libraries to keep the linker command line small, but does *not* generate export files (.exp) containing the libraries globals symbols, the compile time linker does not known anything about them. I think, if dovecot build would use libtool to create the libraries, libtool would export the libraries symbols to fix this. And this is, what my script does. It looks on the compiler command line for library file (.a) and exports all global symbols to an .exp file. The paths of these .exp files are appended to the original compiler command line and so -bexpall knows about the globale symbols defined in the libraries and is able to export them. I don't know if this information is useful for you, because you're using gcc. But if you are using AIX ld (instead of gnu ld) you have to deal with this problem, I think. This broke some clients. - If Dovecot is tried to be started when it's already running, don't delete existing auth sockets and break the running Dovecot - If deliver failed too early it still returned exit code 89 instead of EX_TEMPFAIL. - deliver: INBOX fallbacking with -n parameter wasn't working. - passdb passwd and shadow couldn't be used as master or deny databases - IDLE: inotify didn't notice changes in mbox file - If index file directory couldn't be created, disable indexes instead of failing to open the mailbox. - Several other minor fixes
