[Dovecot] lock files causing time outs with Thunderbird

You mean dotlock files (e.g. "Trash.lock")? Does Dovecot log anything?

Are you using Dovecot deliver? If not, mbox_very_dirty_syncs=yes should
speed things up with large mboxes.
