this is the standard error you get when using sun's make on a Makefile that
assumes GNU make.  get and install GNU make (if you don't already have it
installed)

sorry, i can't help you with the second issue, dovecot 0.99.11 works fine on
my sol9 box, so i'm sticking with that until 1.0 comes out (and it is also time
to build a new mail server)
